FOOTBALL: Pitt – Player Postgame

It feels surreal. Honestly, this game was
very important to us for us to even have the
Coastal in our conversation, because last year this
game was the game that made us lose the Coastal. So I feel as though the team
and I came into this game with a better intent,
and we were determined to win this game today. You know, you guys
had some trouble in the first half
protecting Bryce. Looks like they were
trying to man you guys up a lot in the second half. In that third quarter you got
that lone touchdown catch on just a crossing route. Talk me through
just your mindset once you caught that ball
across the [INAUDIBLE].. Honestly, my mindset
was I just heard Coach Higgins in the back
of my head talking about, turn upfield, don’t dance. And once I turned upfield
I seen it was a defender. It was just one
left, and I was not letting tackle me and maybe
not get into the end zone. Yes, in the second half we
saw that little run game was kind of working for
them, so we were trying to adjust to
the run a little bit. But we wanted to stay
in our nickel front, so with 11 personnel, 10
personnel they had us going, and also 12 where they had
tight ends [INAUDIBLE],, so we were trying to
play around their scheme. I think Coach Hal and Coach Pop
and the defensive coordinator and our defensive staff did
a great job adjusting us, you know, playing the
scheme around that, and then just putting it in
our hands to make the plays, honestly. And then while
we’re in the nickel, the drops just
kind of do itself. Trying to pressure
the quarterback. You can see when
he was pressured he get his eyes downfield and
kind of get out the pocket, and he’s already
locked on one receiver. That’s how Gahm got his pick. He was on that one
receiver the whole time, so he had his pre-reads
going strong for him and I think we just had a
good job with the pressure and the drops. Drops were huge
for us this week. You know, coming up in there
with those big, physical guys, the front side is no joke. It’s the trenches, so when
you get to step in there you’ve got to bring
your big boy pads, and I felt I was lucky
enough and the backers were getting me open
with their blitzes too. And it’s not just me. It was the whole
defense on that blitz, so I’m just happy
with the pursuit and how hard we were
running to the ball on that.
